I found Book of the New Sun to be substantially heavier going than, say, Lay of the Long Sun or Wizard/Knight.

My feeling is the first time, you gotta just go with the flow and realize you aren't going to get it all, and then on subsequent rereads you'll see more and more.

But also you may want a dictionary close to hand. A thorough one.
