You attack using Magnus cards of different weapons. You start off being only able to select two cards at once, but as a character’s class increases, the amount increases - eventually to a maximum of 9. When the enemy attacks, you use Magnus cards of armor. You can also use healing Magnus.
There are different elements for some cards. Fire and Water oppose each other, as do Light/Dark and Wind/Chronos. Each character also has unique finishing moves. You can take photos of enemies and party members, which will be your primary source of money.
It’s an awesome game! If you can’t find the GameCube one for a reasonable price, it also has a remaster on the Switch (Digital only).
The main character, Kalas, is a snarky anti-hero type. He and Lyude (a kind ex-Imperial soldier) are my favorites. It seems like a predictable story, but it isn’t.
Some Magnus change over time. For example, the healing Magnus “Bamboo Shoot” eventually becomes an attack Magnus called “Bamboo” and then another called “Fishing Rod”. You can combine some Magnus in battle to create new ones.
