Yes, this is essentially true. But let’s not forget also that In the early 1920s the US placed quotas on the # of people from each country with the intention of limiting the # of southern Europeans. They came back the next year and tightened it.
Seems in humans DNA
When humans appeared on earth 🌎 they gradually migrated to other lands, then to continents..As more movements occured people got possessive of their area, land etc & resented other migrants coming to their little paradise.. So compounded by hundreds/thousands of yrs..Here we are
It seems to be a human thing...it's everywhere in our history. The Founding Fathers may have thought they were escaping it when they 'made' America, but I think we're cursed to bring this pathological need to pigeonhole each other everywhere we go, unfortunately.
Unless you were Chinese... Seriously, since the founding it's been a non-stop series of laws that declared certain "undesirable" groups and ethnicities as unwelcome. The targets just kept changing.
My grandparents came here early 1900s from Ukraine to escape the corrupt Romanov kingdom. A cattle boat into NYC and 7 children later born in the US, all successful. My mom one of 7.
Canadian here. The 'first of mine' landed in Boston in 1635. I look at some of these people whose 'ancestors' landed in the 1800's, and think they get to pick who's got a right to be here, like "who the F are you??" To me, if you're a citizen for one day, you're a citizen as much as I've ever been.
The world belongs to people. There should be no borders no limitations on our experience of exploration of all of the beauty of every reachable corner.
To immerse ourselves in the culture and beauty of other countries and its people.
There were restrictions earlier. If you had TB you weren't wanted. My great grandmother came over from Scotland with TB. Her cough was snuck past the medical officer on Ellis Island by having her wait sitting down and having one of the two waiting in line fetch everyone else.
People of African descent came against their will. People of Asian descent had difficulty entering the US at various times. Those of European descent. . . .
Somewhat depressingly what does it say about the state of the world that anyone would want to go anywhere near America. Although that might be turned on its head in next four years. Other countries might be faced with an American refugee problem (fleeing from the USA).
THIS is what I tell my students.legally” was a “what’s your name? Let me look at your eyes, can you climb the steps without getting winded? Welcome to America.
We are all immigrants with the exception of native Americans. My family came here before the Revolutionary war. They all make the trip no matter where the trip starts.
