Other countries will retaliate in similar ways. A trade war on an international scale would be devastating for everyone. The Smoot-Hawley tariffs had that chilling effect after the Depression started, and Trump's tariff threats are much worse.

While I think this strategy is brilliant and far sighted - I also see a potential for the blue states like CA and NY being hit up to pay even MORE than they already do to support the impoverished red states where more people currently depend on welfare and other public assistance programs.
