ignorance certainly plays a role, but the ignorance is closely connected to hatred of marginalized groups. people understood that Trump was promising to hurt "those" people. that's why they voted for him, even if they don't know virtually anything else about politics.

I do think a lot of people voted for him because of the non-stop constant anti-government bullshit they get from right-wing media and have been getting from right-wing media for decades. But anti-government rhetoric is of course saturated with "those people" attitudes.
