It was really an R&D support team, not rivals primary dev team. It was an expected layoff for the kind of work they did. Still shitty and still an icky move, and a reminder that AAA is still a meat grinder.
Imagine if they hired people solely based on skill/audacity/dedication/etc instead of only counting the recorded years of experience working in the industry, ignoring all the side passion projects done in their spare time.

Gaah! Me too! I'm a jack-of-all-trades in programming and I've made my own albums but without "10+ years of professional usage of professional grade software for professional reasons" I don't fit any applications.
