There are save points! Eventually, ha ha. I beat this on my stream and legit loved it, despite the jank. There are some surprisingly daring adventure-game moments in it.

I will say the save points are the checkpoints in the game, so it's best to save at each one. Makes it more fair, and most of the time the save is right at the start or right before a level. It's pretty generous from my experience having played it for the first time last week.

Oh that'd be it then yeah, it's part of how the game is designed for sure givin the exploratory nature of the levels making checkpoints beyond just screen based would have been odd for the time, so i think they used saves to balance it. Kind of awkward when ya can't save yeah.

It didn't do that for me. I played through both stories on normal. Heck you can't unlock hard until you complete the game after finding a key in the first stage

Castlevania 64 is a rough game I remember excitedly grabbing from Blockbuster. But it ended up being so frustrating for me that I never touched it after the first day.
