In my department, all of the adjunct faculty are already retired. We could not hire *anyone* with a degree in computer science for the amount that the university is willing to pay adjuncts.

Last time I checked, they paid a flat fee per course, and even teaching five courses per semester plus summer school you'd be making less than $40,000. I have undergrad students working internships who make better money than that.

And of course, no adjunct is going to be offered that number of classes at a single school. The folks I've known were generally working at three or more different universities and community colleges trying to make ends meet.

This stinks for their students, but it also means that there are fewer folks available to share in outside of classroom duties, overburdening and stressing out those faculty lucky enough to be around. This in turn also stinks for students.

When I was an adjunct - I didn’t read the fine print in my contract - I was just so happy to be teaching. Turns out I signed away my ownership of the course syllabus and materials I developed, and got paid shit for it in the process. I did not teach a second class and haven’t pursued it since.
