Geophysical and geological evidence indicate that the Mediterranean became isolated from the ocean ~5 million years ago due to the tearing of a lithospheric slab under S Spain. The dry Mediterranean climate then caused the accumulation of a km-thick layer of salt, today buried under sediment.
