The Departed is great! It's just shorthand for a director getting an Oscar for one movie because they didn't win the previous year for a "better movie." Scorcese directed the shit out of Departed, just like Trump definitely wants Cheney dead; but they've each done more notable "work."
I loved it too - I'm from Boston's North Shore and was living in SF at the time and appreciated Matt Damon and Mark Wahlberg bring out those accents. I had to explain to (West Coast) friends I was with that I grew up around people who really speak like that. (Scorcese should have won for "Casino"!)
