Maybe the word wasn’t used before then, it’s possible it comes from Gaelic as well.

Could be
it would be probably Norse origin if exclusive to Orkney , but the islands were resettled , largely with Fifers , when it became a Scots earldom . I've heard 'hooly' so widely in Scotland I'd be surprised if it was Norse
