Not all games run on linux, each game's page lists what operating systems it supports

But I do have Ubuntu dual boot on a laptop (which another kid has nicked for 'college work') and even I can use it.

Linux Mint is an Ubuntu-based distro and is dead easy to use.

I think that's true but even then Steam runs Proton (its own build of Wine) which can run some Windows only games. I run Civ 6 with it.

The new SteamOS (might not be out quite yet), also an alternative called Bazzite, are worth a look.
