Avian flu, introduced species, and habitat loss, potentially among other factors. Grazing livestock destroy the ʻalalā's habitat and predators like the roof rat and domestic cat eat the birds and their eggs. This is pretty much the same story for any indigenous bird of Hawaiʻi.

I guess only this sub-species went extinct in that particular habitat. Many, many subtypes of crows, but these are specific to that region of the world.

ʻAlalā feathers were traditionally collected en masse for use in making elaborate feathered capes and staffs for aliʻi chiefs. Many of these are intact and preserved well; if needed, DNA could be extracted from them to clone diversity back into the gene pool.

I don't think this would necessarily happen, given how cumbersome and expensive it would be to take and sort through DNA samples from important cultural artifacts, but we have so many of their feathers that even if every living ʻalalā suddenly dropped dead, not all hope is lost.
