I sometimes ask “AI” enthusiasts: would you want someone to ask a chatbot about you and then assume the answer is accurate?

What about a police investigator?
What about a romantic interest?
What about a prospective employer?

I saw this when Pavel posted it 5 months ago, but it hits differently after finishing the book Invisible Rulers, which talks about how the Internet enables "bespoke realities". The author didn't talk about using chatgpt as a search engine, but that definitely qualifies. 😬

Can confirm my teen keeps using chatgpt as a search browser. I explain why that's bad, but can't get them to stop long term.

Oh ChatGPT has shredded my pedagogical strategies for teaching writing, critical thinking, and analysis. And, almost worse than that, it’s created a new level of distrust of my students’ work, which I hate. I don’t want to be a cop but I also want them to LEARN. It’s a nightmare.

Hmmm. Not sure about that. TBH, I don’t think they think too much about it? They use ChatGPT because it exists, it’s easy, and many students (mine at least) are working full time while taking classes and they want to cut corners when they can.

I’ve never used ChatGPT, I refuse. But I’ve seen plenty of screenshots of other people using it and I think I’d ask a student getting made up facts from ChatGPT to tell it X fact is wrong and watch ChatGPT agree and tell them something different to “correct” itself. Maybe that would help somewhat?

Teachers need to keep a few illustrative queries at hand. Like: “How many Rs in ‘strawberry’?” or “How to I keep the toppings from sliding off my pizza?” so that these kids can see first hand that they’re using high tech bullshit generators.
