One thing I realized while writing Our Missing Hearts (which takes place in an authoritarian USA) is that I was pushing back on the idea of the lone savior, the idea that there's a chosen one who will magically solve it all in one battle. The exact opposite is true.

When someone says “why isn’t anyone DOING anything,” it sometimes seems to me that they’re looking for a superheroic action that saves the day rather than the kind of steady, human-scale work that actually is happening and could use your help if you have some time
