OIR MISSING HEARTS is not a dystopia, exhibit #978.

Teachers hiding Harriet Tubman posters, origami paper cranes, and rainbows from schools bc they were terrified that Hegseths would see them as “signs of Black, Japanese and gay culture” in violation “of the new rules from Washington.”

This is so beyond dark.

I saw you speak in Louisville in the summer of 2022 at an NCTE conference (my first in-person thing) and had just finished Our Missing Hearts. Even then I thought to myself how close the book was to the surface of the world. Its reality just waiting for us. Prescient.

I have been thinking a lot about your book these days. Also, as a teacher I can’t imagine stopping teaching about other cultures and real history. For goodness sake, I teach multilingual learners. What would this say to them?

I would absolutely NOT object to this if the Secretary of DUH-fence was hanged in their place. Priorities you know. For the people of the brave and strong Ukrainian people I say FUCK the Back-Stabber.
