The one thing no one would teach or talk about was pricing. It was finally a photographer who told to add your hours plus your studio cost which should be 1 ½ of you time. They also told me to charge yourself a decent wage.

I've gone through I believe two prices changes over the short course of doing commissions lolol! I only kept them simplistic at base level since the number sequence felt easier for me, but I feel worried about making them higher because I feel the quality won't match the price ;-;

"You need to be making at LEAST minimum wage" is something I see a lot and it's true but I am telling you that you need to charge MORE THAN THAT. Art is a skill. It is a craft that you have honed and worked on for YEARS, degree or not. It's a special service that people are asking for.

You need to be charging for the hours you spend putting together references, talking with your client, and working on the commission itself + even more depending on circumstances. Commercial work needs to cost more. A lot more. So much more. You can ask for big numbers and that is okay. It's fine.

What's more: people will actually SEEK OUT artists who charge a lot for their work. Do you trust headphones for $2 or do you want the $30 pair? Which one are you more likely to invest in? Why? And why should your art be any different. CHARGE MORE. Get what you are owed.

Your time and your effort is worth something. Do not give discounts to friends and family; they should value your experiences and the skills you are perfecting. They should support you --- not try and grab something for cheap simply because they know you.

If they come to you for a professional service, they need to pay the professional fees. End of story. I am so tired of seeing artists totally undersell themselves or end up screwed out of so much money just because they are friends with the person who is commissioning them. Charge more. You!! More.

It took me so long to learn these lessons. I want other artists to know right NOW that it's okay to price your work fairly. People will find you. They will pay you what your art is worth. Be kinder to yourself -- have more pride in what you do. Art is hard. It's a fight every day.

Ironically, I lowered my prices by around 20-30% a few months ago and went from getting basically no commissions at all to having a steady-ish income.
I had based my prices off of what other artists say I could charge based on my art but it doesn't necessarily mean people will pay for it...

They need to pay for it. You deserve clients who will pay you a living wage out the gate, period. When the art is lovely but the prices are super low, people will try to dodge you like a bullet due to it looking like a scam. It's hard finding a middle-ground and I am happy you're succeeding. 💖
