The tune we now know as ‘Hark! The Herald Angels Sing’ was originally written by Felix Mendelssohn, but it wasn’t a carol. It was composed to celebrate 400 years since the invention of the Gutenberg printing press.

Not entirely clear from the way this is worded but this is _the tune_, that is, the melody of the song.
The composition was written for the Press, but the arrangement with the lyrics was not. Like a medieval soundcloud, the guy laying the bars didn't write the beats.
