Picture books are not just ink on paper. Picture books are not just for bedtime. Picture books provide so many learning opportunities to develop critical and curious minds, and because they are filled with visual cues picture books can also help with learning a new language.
Also, picture books are the first form of art that children are exposed to. Fine art for kids! And that’s why picture books can foster a love of art AND a love of reading. But I think more importantly, they can awaken a child’s creative potential in ways that nothing else can.
In my talk I spoke about how teachers turn picture books into fun, engaging and invaluable experiences for children. I spoke about subtext and peritext (all the elements outside the spectrum of the main text of the literary work, including endpapers and title pages).
I spoke about the magic of picture books and how reading a book is far different from watching a screen (observer v participant) and how the stillness of reading can open a child’s mind to new ideas.
