We have a decent understanding of the building blocks of social interaction: communication and social learning, norms and institutions, cooperation and conflict. All of these are structured by the *information architectures* that make up our societies.

In the paper, we discuss the nature of these architectures, lay out how they have changed over time—giving rise to new constraints and new affordances—and how they are likely to change the nature of inter-societal competition.
