At best, most pediatricians break even. Generally costs more than it brings in. Pediatricians would make so much more money without vaccines. Room turnover would be faster. A lot less overhead. But it's one of the most important things we do.

I had a coworker who was agonizing that his kids weren't being allowed into school without their vaccinations. I walked him through this, and brought up Lancet's retraction of the Wakefield article.
Apparently he talked to his wife and got his kids vaxed. At least that's what he told me.

This argument is so frustrating. FM offices make minimal $ on vaccines. And with the high cost of rsv and covid vaccines coupled with unpredictable reimbursement, it is often easier (for adults) to send them to the pharm. i hate the disinformation…

As a common citizen, I rely on medical professionals and proven science. It absolutely baffles me that people choose to ignore proven methods of preventing diseases. They keep saying I do my own research yet ignore the proven evidence that’s already there.

Yup. Most of the kids with influenza I see in the PICU didn't get their flu shot. I always advise people to get it so they don't have to see me. I'd be happy to have less to do and fewer kids on vents.

Also it can be straight up money losing. It’s not just the cost of the vaccine dose given. Among the additional costs are excess vaccine doses, the VIS printing, the syringe and needle, sharps waste, provider time, nursing time, reporting to registry time, fridge maintenance logging, cute stickers 😁

I’m old enough to remember- it was a rare night on call as a pediatrics resident (early 80s) when we did NOT admit at least a couple of young children for meningitis, sepsis, pneumonia. Lots of longterm sequelae. We CAN’T go back!!!

Exactly - I’d almost forgotten how terrifying possible epiglottis in the ER was! Because I’d moved on to Hem Onc as H Flu and Pneumococcal vaccines became available, it took awhile for me to realize how those common yet serious problems had virtually disappeared. Really, we can’t go back!!

I don’t know more than that. Not sure if he meant up charge for the actual shot or if they don’t get $ for their time.

The medical system via private insurance is hella broken.

They get reimbursed for the cost of the shot, they can also bill for the time spent with the patient (if it’s a well child check for instance).

Yep. I make WAY more money from sick visits/hospitalizations than from routine outpatient work. Insurance just doesn’t reimburse much for preventative care.
