Interesting. I haven't encountered that and now I'm wondering why not. Personally I just say the number "94" for Interstate 94 for example. Google maps will put "I-" in front of it when reading out directions, but never "the".

A good chunk of the Great Lakes region does this too, which has been convenient for me as my life has been entirely either near the Great Lakes or in California.
