No, it's not. They pay some of the contributors.

Did you read the article I linked? It discusses a feature called adapters which many frameworks, including SvelteKit, provide, but Next.js does not.

Svelte is still under the power of the Triangle Company.

What happens if they stop backing it...

They are not fully independent.

They should create a foundation, seek for donation from multiple source and things would be different
