I lowkey feel this, sometimes I just flat-out ignore messages that only go "hey" or something, but I never like to admit that I feel this way because I feel like some people might see it as a "pretentious artist" thing to do > >

There's nothing pretentious about it. Dropping a raw "hi" or "can I ask you something" in a DM is putting the responsibility of continuing the conversation on you despite them initiating it. I'm gonna assume it's not that important at best, and a bot at worst

Yeah, I assume the latter the most too. Most of my messages I get that are just "hi" almost always are spambots, ugh

One time I got a "hi" message and think I evaded a dick pic when they told me "I have a surprise for you" or something like that. Told them I was at a coffee shop so don't make it inappropriate.

They never responded and their account got locked by Twitter hours later

I fully agree, cause I'm also the type of guy who will immediately read a notification (when I see it) even if I'm doing other things, so if there's nothing for me to address I'm likely not going to

My favorite story to tell was how one of the few times i actually responded to a stranger's 'hi how r u' message lead them to tell me they got a tooth removed
So 99% of the time it's either someone being really overly-familiar, a scammer, or someone trying to get free art from you
