Any PI in a low-cost housing market ever thought of buying a "Lab House" for guaranteed rental income? I guess it would be too oppressive/COIy to have your PI also be your landlord.

I know a PI that runs a training/internship program that had trouble finding short term housing for the students so they purchased rental property. The PI used an external property manager to avoid COI.
Honestly given the hard time we have dealing with campus housing for internships, this is a more appealing option each year. Of course housing is more expensive here so it would not be easy to buy a rental property.
I wanted to see if we as a group or even department could rent an apartment close to a national lab. The answer was no for various reasons, though I didn't push too much
I think buying a house for guaranteed rental income very COI-y, but to enable convenient low-cost housing w/ COI mitigation? 🤷
