The great thing about linux and BSD folks is, we owe what we love to community efforts in open source. We aren't only passionate about what we enjoy but understand it's a combined effort of passionate people, many who are volunteering their time who responsible for it.

Indeed. I'll admit that in 95, I wondered if Linux would be at the level of SunOS and AIX. By '98, when Postgres and Oracle ported over to Linux, I figured it would. Then in 04 when I got my first Linux job (HP-UX/Oracle migration) I knew it would!

My journey began in '99 when a friend talked me into trying linux on a laptop i had just bought. I was otherwise tied to Windows and Mac's at work and home and i loved the idea that it was open, free and people could contribute to it vs being a commercial closed product.

I do mostly creative things and for a long time options on linux were lacking, there are still some things i need Windows for at times... i own synths / drum machines and camera gear that need Win / Mac OS for firmware updates, WINE won't work and will brick them.

I now do creative things in linux & am looking into @bitwig.bsky.social for more options with audio production, DarkTable, GIMP, Rawtherapee are great for photography / working with RAW files from my Nikon.

I've loved the adventure & am so happy desktop linux finally offers professional grade apps.

I pinned the Linux feed, but it's all just post about Windows 11 or people that praise Linux only on an idealogical level.

They say they would love to use it if just wasn't so shit.

I see a lot of posts from folks who are enjoying starting out with linux, see long time users sharing helpful info at times as well but you're right... there's a lot of nonsense in the linux feeds here.

Personally i now prefer Bluesky to Mastodon but Mastodon was far more useful for linux content.

There is a LinuxNOBS feed here i was checking daily but turns out the person who created and maintains it bans folks for all sorts of personal reasons, reasons that have nothing to do with linux it appears.

I've pinned the Linux and Linux & FOSS feeds now and just check those.

Also a very large contingent of folks hating Windows 11 or expecting Win 10 to d/c support and talking about switching to linux.

Some are excited about it, some are nervous about learning something new but both dislike Microsoft enough now to want to try it.

I can both hate and love Linux simultaneously. This is an advanced technique you acquired after certain feats, like running your own LDAP server or manually fixing an Arch update.

💯 - Spent enough time in that category over the 26 years i've used it to finally reach a point where i value stability over experimentation and bleeding edge.

There's a lot to be said for choosing distro's and updated apps that are known to be solid.

When i want something more to scratch that itch of experimenting or a more complex workflow for daily tasks, that's when i boot the ThinkPad running Qubes...

Or just fire up a VM.
