This 💯. Count me as one of the few who's glad Inside the NBA is going off air. Just a bunch of resentful old cranks. Bring back a show like NBA Inside Stuff that celebrated the players and the game.
I don't find the modern NBA interesting. It's basically (as far as I'm concerned) a glorified 3pt contest.
Jordan was right
“When you have that mentality of making 3s, you don’t go to the hole as much. You go to the 3pt line and start sitting there, waiting for someone to find you.”
I understand your view, but its more about how the 3s are made. No team does this the same and the game has been as varied and exciting as its ever been. Derrick White being open isnt a scheme its the Celtics forcing a team into rotation. MPJ open is the result of Jokic being an unguardable genius.
There is a huge media problem. Instead of embracing the actual product on the court it's more about the personal narrative of said announcer. Their own agenda is put before the actual gameplay. I don't want to hear stats from the 90s. I want to see video breakdowns of ATOs and ghost screens.
NBA podcasts are a big reason as well. For every dunkers spot podcast there are 9 Ringer podcasts full of emotional Fan boys , saying that guys suck every day. No real analysis.
I can find 40 NFL pods of people trying to break down what we don’t understand on the field.
The NBA does have a media problem. Football is popular in spite of the daily sports media, not because of it. But the bigger problem is the NBA doesn’t sell teams - it’s about players, which doesn’t build sustained passion. It was a good model but it needs to be shifted.
Absolutely , it is a constant chorus of old players complaining about “back in my day …” like they were the high water mark, or blow hards who obviously watch very little NBA (amazingly Draymond is both, while being a current ROLE player)
NBA media coverage embraces being a hater. There are other places in pop culture that embrace being a hater as well, but they’re not billion-dollar sports leagues.
I don’t see how they have a media problem. What could possibly be the problem of letting every one of your media outlets constantly shit on the current game and spend entire shows talking about how it was better when they were younger?
I think NBC with Taylor, Blake and Dirk has a chance to be great. We'll need to give them time to develop chemistry but Taylor is a fantastic host, Blake and Dirk obviously know ball but they're also very very funny dudes. Blake spoke about it and he said he wants to take it in a positive direction
I am so excited for Dirk and Blake, they are real hoop lovers and it has potential. They also strike me as less insecure than Chuck/Shaq/kenny/draymond all the other stars who feel the relentless need to bash the game
I mean, duh. The NBA media and the talking heads do nothing but trash the current game, wax on about how much better it used to be (debatable), and how the current players are soft. Draymond's comments throughout that broadcast were horrible. And they wonder why fans are tuning out?
Ive been crying out for positivity. Inside the NBA dying was a blessing. Plenty of ex players are intelligent ball knowers. The NBA platforms too many people on entertainment value not love of the game. Entertainment is absolutely needed but secondary to love of the game. Just dont hate the product
A FANTASTIC example is Kevin Garnett, he doesn’t sit there talking about VORP and RAPTOR. He just loves Basketball and knows great play when he sees it. Im hoping his fellow Hall of Famer Dirk can bring some of that too
Yes, there's areas for the NBA to improve but as someone who grew up in the 90s: Please, go to Youtube or wherever and watch a full NBA game from the 90s or early 2000s. The skill level is much lower. Most of these ppl complaining don't actually watch, including NBA show talking heads
You act like we can't find those games online. Skill level has definitely gone up, just so has the BS the league does to make defending harder to do without getting foul calls
I explicitly say to go find the games online. 😂 Defense was straight up mugging back then and it hurt the game. Maybe the NBA over corrected. I'd love hand checking back. But that's the point, we can tweak stuff but ppl are acting like the product is shit now when it's not.
They actually started allowing that hand checking on the perimeter back last year, and you can see that it did help balance things out. The fact that zones are legal now when they weren't in the 90s also helps defense. If you had today's spacing with 90s illegal defense rules, offense would be nuts.
People really do need to go back and watch 90s basketball. You had 8 of 10 players all within 18 feet of the basket at almost all times. I just sit there watching and wonder why nobody back then figured out that guys should get out of the way.
Thinking Basketball actually had a good episode about this and their contention is players are doing more read and react, so it's more taxing on both defenses and offenses. E.g., the amount centers are moving within the half court sets is so much higher. Good deep dive
