It's usually a combination of both, but it also depends on the game. If it's multiplayer/online and not heavily story based, I usually try to see what other people think via live streams or videos. But if it's more story based, I try to judge it based on trailers and developer provided info.

I usually watch a bit of the game for myself- sometimes peoples' opinions shadow too much of a written/spoken review, so I'd rather see the game for what it actually is :)

Usually a review, but half of what I'm doing in that is seeing if the gameplay looks fun. I don't overly care about the number at the end as I've usually made my mind up by then.

I do both, but I exclusively look at NEGATIVE reviews. If everything people complain about is stuff I can live with, that's ultimately what matters. (And nobody in their right mind would pay people to write fake negative reviews, right?)

I'm such an easy sell, I'll often watch 2 minutes of someone else playing a game and be like "I need this"

This is usually indie games, though. Larger/AAA games, I tend to know whether or not I'm buying before it launches based on studio, genre, etc.

Combo of both, but I also like to know the reviewers points of reference and tastes in advance which, ig idk how you would incorporate that other than subconscious impressions elicited by thumbnails and tone

Usually I'm at least aware of major upcoming games before they're out if they're in my wheelhouse, I'll usually check launch day user reviews on Steam and Metacritic to see if the game launched as a trainwreck, then look at gameplay.

I check out reviews mostly. I also like to watch gameplay trailers but I tend to avoid watching other people play (especially the beginning) because I don't want to ruin my first experience and/or get spoiled.
