I don't speak for everyone, but a big reason was that it was a budget remake. Plenty of things, instead of adapted, were replaced by other 3DS assets. That and running significantly worse. At least TTYD Switch had a stable 30fps, and wasn't as hurt by being a slower paced game.

Not to mention, this remake also killed Alphadream, a big reason why I personally despise it. Nintendo sent this game out to by releasing it alongside Mario U Deluxe. And the new content with Jr. isn't good. You're better off watching a Let's Play of it on YouTube than playing it.

The remake didn't kill AlphaDream, everybody refusing to give it a chance did. I'll never understand why people refuse to give a game a chance then use its sales to blame it for any negative result of that. Nintendo treated it like shit with its release timing and marketing, the game deserved better

Can you blame them? By 2017 the writing was on the wall and people were done actively buying 3DS games. It wasn't even a good remake. I'm sure Nintendo looked at sales numbers when they were considering what to do with the series. They were considering just moving on from M&L.

Every subsequent game after Bowser's Inside Story did substantially worse sales wise. The series had three flops in a row after Dream Team. And by the time the remake came out, the series was plagued by over-saturation. A series that used to get a game every four years was getting one every year.

It should matter to you when the series fate hangs in the balance. I'd want the game to succeed rather than fail, and why it failed was because IT RELEASED ON THE 3DS IN 2019 and Nintendo released U Deluxe on Switch on the same day! It was sent out to die with no fanfare, even Nintendo didn't care.

-it WASN'T a bad remake. It had a few oddities, that's all. Some changed voice clips and weird animation choices are fucking nitpicks even if I didn't like them. Just like Mecha-Chomps being deleted from the SSS remake didn't bring it down, none of the weird shit in this one brought it down either.

It's because the remake killed Alphadream. Nobody was asking for a remake of a backwards compatible game on a system everybody had moved on from. Why do you think people were disappointed Luigi's Mansion was remade for the 3DS instead of the Switch? Same situation.

The remake itself is subpar. It feels like some of the charm of the original is lost, the new content while it has some good story additions, it's just not fun. It also runs poorly, which you can't say about the TTYD remake which runs solid.

And both it and the Superstar Saga remake to a greater extent fell victim to sterilization to varying degrees. You really can't say Mario RPG and TTYD were sanitized, and those were both extremely faithful without Nintendo imposing any kind of restrictions on them.

Was it because the 3DS visual style of Mario & Luigi was unpopular? I can't say I understand that either, I love the aesthetic of the series on 3DS (aside from Paper Jam, but that's nothing to do with the sprites/textures and more because it's all vanilla NSMB stuff)

It’s clearly because Partners in Time was right there and was far more in need of a rework. Sadly, I don’t think AlphaDream’s financial status at the time and how much original content exclusive to PiT would need to be redrawn made it feesible.

That's not a reason to trash the remake we got, as far as im concerned there are still far more positives about it than negatives and it doesnt deserve the way it went down in history. After so long of Mario RPGs being sanitized the fanbase should have been eating these remakes up ravenously.
