I've been riding a bike for a few years for fun, for groceries, for commuting, etc. But I can't ride during the winter. I'm just not tough enough. The intense heat the past couple of summers has also been challenging.
I have to put my bike in the basement for the winter and it's not easy to access once it's there. So once it goes in (soon) I don't get it out till it warms up.
They help. But if you are arguing that ice and slush do not present a more slippery surface even with studded tires than dry asphalt it is simply not true.
