I remember feeling excited about the announcement of this game as a kid but when I saw the early screenshots on the mags I thought it was a good idea to cancel it. It didn't look like a promising game at all. The Sega saturn deserved better.
I agree with this. Sonic X-Treme's development was a complete mess from the very beginning. Yuji Naka (programmer for the Genesis games), even told the STI team "good luck". Considering how the game looked at the end, I think SEGA made the right call as well.
And we could've had Sonic 4 on the Saturn, but Yuji Naka was burnt out on Sonic, so Sonic Team made NiGHTS and Burning Rangers instead. In my opinion, they should've made Sonic 4, then the others so the Saturn could have that killer app it sorely needed globally...
