Everyone is different but I think if you did a morning shot you might only be out the following day recovering. At most two.

Get the injection Friday morning and then should be back to work Monday if sick days are in short supply.

Most people I know have not had any problems with it. One person did lose a day. We’re talking about people in their late 50s and 60s. I should’ve listened to my wife. I spent Monday before Thanksgiving in the ER. They thought I had pleurisy until the rash appeared later. Still in a lot of pain.

I'm sorry to hear you're having such a bad bout of it! are you planning to get the shot at some point in the future? there's a blood test that can measure your circulating antibody titer to the virus.(I've had that test) I think the antibody level needs to subside before you get the shingles shot.

I’m not sure it’ll do any good once you’ve had shingles. It is a bit different than a typical vaccine, as the virus exists in your body, dormant, attached to your spinal cord once you’ve had chickenpox. I will see my cardiologist tomorrow and ask him. Primary care doctor didn’t volunteer anything.

I had a bout of something once that an ER doctor believed was Shingles, but I wasn't convinced since I didn't get a rash. My PCP urged me to get the shot anyway. She ordered an antibody titer test-which was very high-presumably meaning I really had just had Shingles. she still said to get the shot.

I don't know how it works when-as you say, the virus is already in your body anyway. I would guess that a bout of Shingles will work the same as a shot-& increase your circulating antibody levels for quite some time & keep the virus in check. maybe getting a shot later on keeps you protected longer.

I should research more too. I have a relative (also a dr) who told me that he'd had a few bouts of it, never with a rash, so it was difficult to recognize. He said the pain followed the pathways of nerve roots in the back--always on just one side of the spine. as a doctor he recognized it that way.
