I initially thought this was a long con to set up jobs for contractor friends. Stopped thinking that about the time of ferry cancellations as it showed any long-term activity is beyond the scope of these jokers.

Yep, my husband works in a large ministry. They went through two rounds of layoffs last year. This year they have an urgent project. They've been forced to hire contractors who are less efficient because they're not integrated into the existing teams and extravagantly more expensive.

Thank you! My husband is hanging in there. He joined the public service out of a desire to serve the community, to do something helpful with the later part of his career, and the govt is making that difficult. He'll just have to outlast them. 😊

So when govts embark on austerity it's usually accompanied by lots of bluster about wasteful spending. But they *never* actually give a criteria for what is necessary and what isn't. They leave that up to the CEs, who often gets panicked into broad retrenchments. The end result is that core

longer wait times, delays in resolution etc). This is the quiet part they never say out loud. That these cost cutting drives cannot be done as some magic broom that sweeps up only the unnecessary. That everyone who uses these services will suffer.
