I still think the half the reason critics and audiences balked at this film was the whole A, B, and C ending mess - where you had to choose which theater was playing which ending. Thankfully home video incorporated all of them.

I loved this movie as a kid, discovered it on VHS, had a big boyhood crush on Lesley Ann Warren as Miss Scarlet. But that was the VHS with all three endings.
I don't know what an adult Trevor would have thought about the theatrical release when you only got one ending.

I never understood having solely the first reaction to this great movie or any movie really. There's no reason someone can't have the first thought and then say "but people found it later and love it and now some people shadowcast it like Rocky Horror".

I showed it to my 13 yo son over the weekend and he was howling. Loved the multiple endings, Tim Curry’s manic explanations and the way the game’s premise fit in with the plot. It’s great to see that it has some real appreciation in the end

another fact: this was the first time a board game was adapted into a movie, and whose idea was that? Debra Hill's. as in, producer / co-writer of Halloween Debra Hill (RIP). she had the idea that a game could be a movie so she went to Parker Brothers, and she did it first. some would say best.
