3 is no slouch! These are highly synergistic decks with a larger number of staples. I would consider many of my decks 3s, regardless of most of them not containing any GCs. 4 is a bit more of the wild west. ANYthing goes here, fast mana, MLD, lockouts, free interaction. - ThreadSky

I know a lot of folks feel 4 is vague or open-ended, but I actually love that it's a casual bracket that's ready for anything! And that's a great start to a pregame conversation.

"Technically I'm a 4 because of MLD, but I don't have fast mana or tutors," is a very concise deck description.

Cant protect against bad actors but if you genuinely dont know, it is almost impossible to build a cedh deck without learning/knowing what the meta looks like

in a cEDH game. But most people I play with in paper have never played a deck at both (or either) of those levels. I think the distinction seems vague and is hard to understand without experiencing it.

Interesting! To me, the way you are describing a 4 seems really clear—and same with its distinctions from 5/cEDH. If I’m playing on MTGO, the difference between joining a “Casual High Power” game and a “cEDH” game is obvious. Both are strong but my casual high power decks would win 0% of the time

I have a Valgavoth upgraded build that you could argue is barely a 3 on paper with no combos or game changers but it’s also quite a mean deck so in most pods I’d call it a 4

MTG players (naturally) want to rules lawyer everything in the game but when it comes to brackets you gotta read the vibes.
