Who is doing open source fairtrade small-scale photovoltaic production? Like Fairphone but for off-grid microgeneration, the sort of thing you might put on a shed roof or a narrowboat.

We are so used to "economies of scale" being important and leading to centralisation, but... a square meter of solar panel on top of my shed will produce exactly as much energy as the same square meter of solar panel in some huge array in a field somewhere.
So if I have an off-grid use for that much energy, tying it to the grid is actually a diseconomy of scale.
Production scaling is also a bit weird here, IIRC the panels themselves are by far the most expensive bit of a huge solar array. Not that hard to make individual units instead.
The argument for a huge array of panels in a field is that if they produce more electricity than is required locally it can go into the grid but if my panel on my shed does, it won't. But surely that's an argument to also charge my phone, my bike lights and anything else that already has a battery.
