(Forgot Alt Text, sorry - the photo shows six books stacked on top of each other from 'The Complete Peanuts' by Charles M Schultz. The spines show that each volume comprises two years: 1959/1960 to 1969/1970)
I remember the 1st Peanuts book I read - A Peanuts Treasury, when I was about 9 or 10. Laughed a lot, of course, but also felt inexplicably moved by (for example) Charlie Brown, sat in the barbers shop, waiting for his dad to finish work. What was going on here? I was in love with the sadness!
Oh that's fabulous :)
I've actually got the very first one too, but I just wanted to show the 60s ones here. I have a few random old compilations and the 60s / 70s seem to be peak sublime comic melancholy.
There's good stuff in all eras, I'm reading through the 80s at the moment, but yeah, the hitrate is especially high from when he really finds his style in the late 50s until about the early 70s.
