In my experience living in a deep red district, there would be no tears shed if he were dragged out of there. My personal opinion is that Trump further hurts his popularity by retaining him.

I don't disagree, but I think there's more to it than that. Trump's brain is mush. He needs someone to take the reins. It makes him look powerful and all he has to do is sign the executive orders put in front of him.
Elon bought the election through Vance. Trump is under a leash ever since and if he sours on Elon, he will be removed through Vance. Republicans fear Elon more than Trump now. Crazy what 200 million $ can achieve.
I think it is actually Peter Thiel behind both Musk and Vance. Musk isn’t really that strategic but he is a great salesman. Thiel seems to like using front men to achieve his agenda.
And let's be honest: Trump is purely a prop. He chooses not read or write. His handlers tell him what he should say and believe and do. He's always been this way. But! He's pushing 80. The WH will get more creative to keep him propped up.
Democracy is as vulnerable as the Citizens that comprise it allow it to be, it's easy to challenge because it's supposed to be. If its not responsive and reactive to challenges/needs it is not doing its job. What keeps it resilient and strong is the equal commitment to responsibilities as rights.
Is that based in reality or giving him an out? Let’s face it, Biden’s cognitive abilities have diminished too. I’m still willing to give him credit. Personally, I think Trump retains enough cognitive ability to be liable for criminal charges. Saying otherwise might give him a credible defense.

Both are clearly deeply insecure people looking for external validation.
It will never be enough, because self-esteem is internal.
