The single cheapest thing a lot of 3d games could do for a big visual improvement: match fog and sky values so the distant geo is not brighter than the sky on the shadow side. Either bring the sky up or the fog down.

Good point! Sometimes it's due to engine limitations sadly. We had this issue on the last game I worked on, tried to fix it but it was impossible without completely redoing the tech
I am not going to call out anyone for doing this, but suffice to say I posted this because I saw footage from 2 different games in development while scrolling that both had this exact problem.
Here is a screenshot from WoW that is mostly fine except for the top tip of mountain.
The Halo ring immediately came to mind, but yeah I try to keep this general rule in mind for illustration. Unless the sun is hitting a geological feature in an intense way from behind the viewer.
Iirc I think Genshin might stylistically do the second on purpose and to decent effect? Or was it Wuthering waves or some other Genshin clone. 🤔 I can't remember.
