I once tried to test an LED quickly with a 9V battery..just a fleeting touch on the terminals and there was an almighty 'snap', the top of the LED flew off and cut me just below an eyebrow. Lesson learned.
That was me at that age…old starter from a fluorecent light that got thrown out… In my mind, that little thing making flashes is not faulty, lets make a night light for my room from it, wiring it directly across mains…. big bad boom, and my ass burned for days after.
Thankfully very quickly followed by the blowing of fuses, one in the C7 lead for my cassette recorder (that I'd wired up to the bulb), and one in the house consumer unit. Thankfully I had * just * about enough sense to not touch the metal bits.
My very sobering lesson at about 12 was to not lie on the carpet, barefoot, tinkering with a mains valve radio and touch a radiator pipe with a toe while simultaneously, accidentally, touching the top cap of the rectifier valve with a screwdriver and finger. That was a hell of a jolt. Stupid me.
Noooo…… bad memories…. Just today I killed a 600V MOSFET with a big bang and some sparks… (just after I removed the current-limiting resistor thinking everything is normal). Grrrrr…. Guess tomorrow will have to try again.

Had a similar experience once, blew up a mosfet with the drain and source reversed 😬
Since I happen to know a bit about ophthalmology I know that cornea damage can have pretty serious consequences.
I have pre-owned corneas so I try to look after them 🙂
