Like Joe Bob said last night, it was published as a serial in a French newspaper from 1909 to 1910, and then published in English 1911. Remarkably, the cistern does exist under the Paris Opera House.

The changes Joe Bob mentioned, The Persian and the ending, are the two biggest deviations from the novel and book. The ending has The Phantom dying from love and being buried by Christine. They should've stuck with the book's ending.

It's not a perfect book, but it's an influential book. There's no doubt that over 100-years later The Phantom continues to influence our pop culture. I'm looking at everyone with a Lon Chaney tattoo. It's rare for a book to influence two genres, horror and musicals.
