Sweden had spent 20 years as a close partner to NATO changing its military to become fully NATO compliant. Sweden was in many ways more compliant to NATO standards than many other NATO countries.
International alliances are transactional arrangements driven by necessity, not camaraderie. When traditional balancing fails, states inevitably gravitate toward stronger blocs. Sweden's plan to spend 2.3% of GDP on defense in 2025 (exceeding NATO targets) epitomizes the security paradox🇸🇪
We spent WAY more during the cold war when we where neutral. Some years up to 10% of GDP. At one point we had the 3rd largest air force in the world. Sweden was (and still is) one of the most militarized countries in the world. Bridges are prepared to be destroyed, same with roads and railroads.
Given Sweden's historical tensions with Russia, pursuing collective security through NATO membership is a strategically prudent and cost-effective choice for a nation of its size.
Is NATO really the answer anymore, people need to start thinking other options. If Usa pulls it troops from Europe, yes it's totally something what can happen. Basically it's us Europeans and you guys against russia. It's not that simple anymore like it was under Biden.
