hey jeremy maybe researchers should have talked to and worked with the people they were taking data from?

except its hard to work with a cohort of people in good faith who start by calling you worthless human garbage and tell you to either kill yourself or die in a fire. Not a great way to open constructive dialogue.

I think the response was extreme and over the top, but I get it. AI is coming for peoples livelihoods, and it’s often doing it through less than ethical means and without their permission. It’s something that is being done to them, and they are understandably upset.

This makes sense to me. I agree with @howard.fm 's original point, but open source doesn't need to use the same methods as big tech. We should build on top of atproto and hf so that we have opted in datasets.

yep. Add a license column to the protocol data model and provide a sliding scale of data use policies users can choose from. This would provide control for users and clarity for developers.
