Texas used to be a purple state. Tennessee used to be a people state. Florida used to be a purple state. So many Southern states were abandoned by the Democratic Party (nationally), allowing them to become conservative capitalist turned fascist supermajorities controlling all 3 branches statewide.

I used to work for a large IT company in the Philly area. Some departments of Texas state government were clients. Our CEO in the early and mid-90s told me that he once had a meeting with Gov. Richards where she personally got him a cup of coffee. He appreciated her unpretentious courtesy.
