I like German directness, but the tone can catch you unawares. Example, this morning at the bakery:

Me, looking in my bag: "I didn't order a croissant"

Baker: "I put it in there as an extra"

Me: "Wow, that's nice"

Baker, in a cheery voice: "Not really, no one else wanted it"
