I’m old enough to remember lol. Urkel made a lasting impression- issue is that the writers started doing THE MOST in a bad way to the character. Also, Jaleel HATED being associated with Urkel and the show for YEARS so all this is funny lol.

I agree with the notion that the writing was bad, his character (He himself) basically put that show on his back! The show was originally centered around the Winslow's ( If we're being honest, we're boring AF🤷🏾‍♂️), with Steve's character as one-time guest appearance. The rest is History..

I'd argue that centering the show around a one-off character is what made the show bad.
Urkel never developed as a character, and because he took up so much screen time, no one else got a chance to either.

I don't think that was the plan tho, the show was originally about the Winslows. The writing featured all the characters, unfortunately Urkel was most liked by the viewing audience and took off

My Wife and kids had a similar premise and was a better written show with more interesting characters.

He wasn’t arguing an opinion though lol Urkel actually DID factually save the show and was the only reason people tuned in. People wanted him to act silly. Jaleel wanted more versatility and so they worked that in but it was detrimental tbh.

Additionally that show was a SPINOFF of some other show anyhow. Only part of that show that aged well is the episode where Carl and Eddie realize that being Black even if your dad is a cop is still the wrong side of the blue line.

I feel like the characters never developed. Eddie was always the player. Laura was bougie, but shallow until it directly affected her. Steve was the weird nerd neighbor with questionable consent practices. Then ratings started tanking and they were just throwing anybody in the mix.

Family Matters was my shit until the storyline became ridiculous and slapstick. Jaleel was a star in my eyes until I realized that he hates Black people and hated playing Urkel. He told us to let Urkel go, so I let him go 🤷🏿‍♀️
