My dad was a pretty hands off parent. But, he read to us before bed. Both of my parents valued books, and encouraged reading. I grew up with a rich vocabulary and an inherent understanding of grammar. I have been grateful for these skills all of my life. Read!
Sorry, no thanks. Senior year in high school broke my brain. I took an AP class in English and also went through the worst depression I felt in my life, and it basically scarred me because my teacher had no pity whatsoever.
The year my father died I stopped reading. I am an avid reader. I felt so lost and despondent.
This year I read 52 books. Itβs not about the number but about consuming information.
Try a magazine. Newspaper. A book filled with essays. Even if it takes six months - reading is vital.
Oh, I do read small things! Articles and the like. I even do text based roleplay! I just can't do books.
I'm really sorry about your dad, though. That's basically what did it for me, too. I almost didn't make it, but I did, so I'm gonna do all I can to enjoy life the best I can.

Be well.
