I would purpose that compassion is what we feel for something that doesn't directly affect us. Empathy I believe is reserved for those things that we do have a direct connection to.
I used to think that, but empathy requires some level of understanding. Age, sex, gender etc comes into play as well as other intersections. Character is dealing with morals. If you can’t understand and can’t relate it just speaks to where you are, not your make up as good or bad person. Now if some
I only ask because the other thing to consider is that would mean you yourself would always need to empathize or your character is flawed, and I’m definitely willing to bet my own money 1.) Your character isn’t flawed 2.) It’s not linear, and 3.) You haven’t always empathized with every situation
2. Bc I still believe that LACK of empathy is a character flaw. Of course different variables will affect how much someone has & etc but LACKING IT is a flaw. And I’m not budging from that.

What if it’s not just a character flaw but a result of generational gaslighting & living in fight/flight.
I know many folks who I saw lose space 4 empathy because they lack the space to heal themselves.
It will only continue if we don’t actively reflect, uncover and heal
