Part 1: Hero or Monster? My Personal Fandom With Hulk!

I cannot actually remember my first Hulk comic, I mean I sporadically picked out comics at flea markets as a kid in Florida growing up in the mid to late 90’s & 00’s. I think my first Hulk memory however was probably my grandfather summarizing.

My grandfather was all about planes, studying elements of nature, westerns, working on cars, a Korean War Airforce vet from Queens, and so damn fun. He loved comics, genre stuff, monsters now and again…anyway he told me loads about superheroes. Spinning yarns, particularly about the Marvels.

Spider-Man, Fantastic Four, Daredevil, X-Men, so many more and The Hulk. As I grew and watched reruns of shows I would catch The Hulk in many animated series. Spider-Man and His Amazing Friends, and particularly maybe my favorite other media Hulk take Season 1 of The Incredible Hulk 1996.

I think I maybe caught a rerun or pieces of the 70’s Hulk show, but Hulk 96 cemented core elements of the character for me. Bruce Banner creating a weapon yet not wanting an innocent like Rick Jones to be hurt, Betty Ross his personal guardian angel trying to help him to the ends of the Earth,

Thunderbolt Ross the Ahab to Banner’s alter ego, The Hulk. A childlike creature that seemingly just wanted friends, acceptance, love…only met with pain, misunderstanding, and suffering, except in glimmers of humanity that helped him, or that Hulk could help. That’s where he clicked with me.

The Hulk and Banner were two halves of the same coin. Banner a brilliant mind forced to make the weapon that would doom him, but courageous enough to prevent another’s pain in saving stalwart pal Rick Jones. Hulk, the monster that could easily crush anyone, but who could just as easily save lives.
