They’re kinda a hybrid profession. They work in concert with an engineer, to take a mechanism, or electronic device, and alter its form to make it easier/intuitive to use, safer, and more aesthetically appealing (IE, more attractive to potential customers).
In many respects they are like architects, and as a profession it emerged from architecture and graphic design
Historically, they were often referred to as “industrial stylists” as in it’s early years, most of the work was in taking machines and adding stylistic flourishes to modernise them.
